Improving home insulation

With the high price of electricity, this information provided by the quantity surveyor Sandra Siliuto Fuentes, will be of great interest to you:

It is important to know that a well-insulated home has a lower electricity consumption, this is because it requires less use of air conditioning systems during the year and in its operation, these systems will work more efficiently and, therefore, more economically.

It is time not to miss a single detail and start a savings plan to take care of our pockets. To do this, we must detect the thermal bridges in our home.

What is a thermal bridge?

A thermal bridge is every point in the elements of the façade or roof of our house where the continuity of the insulation is broken or where materials with high thermal conductivity are used.

Where can thermal bridges be found?

We can divide them into 3 groups:

Thermal bridges integrated in the construction: they occur when there is a change of thickness in the enclosure, such as the pillars integrated in facades, shutter boxes, skylights, openings for installations...

Thermal bridges at envelope junctions: these occur at junctions between 2 or more walls, such as the junction of two façades, the junction of façade and floor slab, the junction of façade and roof...

Thermal bridges due to high conductivity material: in this case, we can talk about aluminium windows, a single-leaf façade that is not insulated...

How can we better insulate an existing house?

The Technical Building Code in its Basic Document on Energy Saving (DB-HE) gives us the guidelines.

There are several options, as indicated below:

Changing the windows: using joinery that avoids thermal bridges, e.g. PVC, and including double glazing with an air chamber between the two.

Injection of insulation in the façade cavity: when it is detected that the façade as a whole is the critical point, this method can be used. It involves making perforations in the outer leaf of the façade through which the insulation is injected. Thermographic images should be taken to detect if the insulation is well placed.

Overlapping: if a complete renovation is going to be carried out, this technique can be used to incorporate insulating panels between the outer face of the façade and the inner face. It is the most economical solution.

External thermal insulation system (SATE): this is a technique that involves covering the outside of the home or building with insulating panels and creates a new finish for our building. This system completely eliminates thermal bridges, making it the most effective.

Direct wall cladding: this is carried out both on walls and ceilings with materials that serve directly as a finish with oriented fibre panels, cork, etc. Or even, on our interior wall we can apply the insulation panels and make a wall cladding with plasterboard panels.
